Why So Many YUPRO Placement Apprentices Find Success
Ongoing professional development transforms potential into workplace performance, one hour at a time
By Andre Brown, Lead Talent Success Manager, YUPRO Placement
Nearly 95% of YUPRO Placement apprentices successfully complete their year-long assignments or transition into full-time employees.
In today’s workforce, where organizations continue searching for effective ways to attract, develop, and retain talent, that’s an extraordinary number. Especially given the need to build and fill pipelines that meet current and future business and operational needs, this type of success is good for the apprentices and for the organizations concurrently.
And it naturally raises an important question: What’s working and why is it working?
According to Andre Brown, Talent Success Manager at YUPRO Placement, the answer has as much to do with what happens after an apprentice is hired as it does with the hiring process itself.
“We work hard to identify talented people and connect them with outstanding opportunities,” Brown says. “But placement isn’t the finish line. It’s where the real work begins.”
Many traditional staffing agencies define success by that initial placing of someone in an apprentice role. YUPRO Placement measures success differently. The organization believes that helping apprentices continue developing after they enter the workplace is what ultimately transforms promising candidates into valued employees – or equipped with the skills and experience to find gainful employment at another business. Building these pathways are the driving force behind how YUPRO Placement approaches apprentices and its other labor platforms.
Maybe this is best exemplified every Wednesday during Professional Development Hour.
Available to every apprentice on assignment, Professional Development Hour (PDH) provides ongoing coaching, learning, and support that is designed to help participants succeed in their current roles while preparing for long-term career growth. Sessions evolve alongside the changing workplace, addressing topics such as professional communication, workplace effectiveness, career development, and emerging technologies that apprentices can immediately apply on the job.
For Brown, Professional Development Hour represents one of the clearest examples of YUPRO Placement’s commitment to continuous learning.
“The workplace doesn’t stop changing once someone gets hired,” he says. “Neither should their professional development.”
Given its role as a driving force in the workplace, and society at large, one recent PDH session focused on AI. Rather than discussing it as a future trend or abstract concept, apprentices explored practical ways to use AI to become more productive in their current roles.
Many participants arrived having already experimented with tools like ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini. So the goal wasn’t simply to introduce it but to learn how AI could help them eliminate repetitive work, improve productivity, and spend more time on the responsibilities that require critical thinking, communication, and human judgment.
One exercise demonstrated how a case manager who spends part of every day formatting notes could build an AI agent that automatically organizes raw information into the required format. What previously consumed valuable time could now be completed in seconds, allowing employees to focus more attention on serving clients and solving problems rather than performing repetitive administrative work.
For Brown, that’s exactly the point.
“AI isn’t replacing people,” he explains. “It’s helping people spend more time doing the work only people can do.”
That practical approach resonated with participants.
“The AI workshop gave me practical tools that I now use every day,” one apprentice shared. “It’s helped me communicate more effectively with clients, improve my documentation, and produce work that’s more organized and useful for the people who rely on it.”
Another participant described learning not simply how to use AI, but how to think more intentionally about it.
“I was able to develop my prompting skills,” the apprentice wrote. “AI is capable of a lot of things, but not thinking for yourself.”
Brown emphasizes that Professional Development Hour is about much more than technology. Every session is designed around a simple question: What skills will help solve for some of the biggest challenges organizations face today and in the future?
Sometimes that means strengthening communication skills. Other sessions focus on navigating workplace relationships, managing careers, or building professional confidence. The topics change as workplace expectations evolve, but the objective remains: helping apprentices continue growing long after they’ve accepted an offer.
That continued investment benefits both apprentices and employers. Each new skill an apprentice develops enables them to contribute more effectively inside their organization so that in short order they grow increasingly productive, adaptable, and into valuable members of their teams.
“Success isn’t just about having the right skills,” one apprentice reflected. “It’s also about having people who encourage you to keep learning, keep growing, and keep moving forward.”
That observation captures the strategy that has shaped YUPRO Placement since its beginning. As a spin-off from non-profit Year Up United, YUPRO Placement embraces a Skills-First approach that recognizes potential while making an intentional investment in developing it. Recruiting exceptional apprentices is only the first step. Continuing to build their skills, confidence, and professional judgment is what enables them to create greater value for their employers over time.
PDH is just one hour of many. Week after week, apprentices continue building the capabilities that help them solve problems, embrace new technologies, communicate effectively, and contribute at a higher level. As they do, employers gain professionals who continue growing long after their first day on the job, helping explain why YUPRO Placement’s apprenticeship success rate consistently stands far above what many organizations achieve.
“PDH is one part of YUPRO Placement’s overall strategy to help our apprentices learn and grow throughout their assignment, Brown said. “This difference is a major benefit to both the talent we employ and our customers; we build a workforce that is consistently learning, growing, and adding the skills needed to tackle some of today’s biggest challenges.”
